A VERY important report has just been issued by the Committee appointed by the British Secretary of State for Air to inquire into “the best methods of fostering the production of civil aeroplanes.” It is perhaps well to make clear at the outset that the Committee was not concerned with “production” in the narrow sense of the term to which we have lately become accustomed—the turning out of the maximum possible number of aeroplanes of identical type in the minimum possible space of time at, as a minor consideration, the least possible cost—but with the wider question of how to ensure that the most efficient and most suitable aeroplanes for commercial purposes are designed and put into service.
