GERMANY has recently shown signs of following the general trend towards the adoption of the lour engined arrangement on all but the smaller transport aeroplanes. The Heinkel He-116 is one of the latest examples to be flown. Although a four-engined aeroplane this machine falls into the category of a medium powered type, as it is equipped with Hirth 508-B engines of only 240 h.p. each. Despite this comparatively low power the He-116 carries a crew of four, 1,214 lbs. of mail and enough petrol for a range of 2,800 miles at a cruising speed of 186 m.p.h. Heinkel monoplanes have long been characterized by their slim fuselages and eliptical icings, and in these respects the He-116 maintains the tradition to perfection.
