An Outline of the Basic Configuration and Aerodynamic Features of the Argosy including Performance and Flight Handling Qualities. THE basic concept of the Argosy as a medium-size freighting aircraft with a large capacity fuselage of high cross sectional area and low freight floor defined to a large extent the shape of the aircraft. A high-wing position was essential, and the rapid loading requirement specified led to the adoption of full width freight doors at front and rear to allow straight-in loading. The raised crew compartment above the freight hold thus became essential, and the possibility of alternative rear fuselage shapes for civil and military use made the twin tail boom layout attractive. This geometry also simplified the rear door design by separating tail load problems from the pressure fuselage. In addition a generous C.G. range was needed to avoid loading restrictions.
