Abstract A hybrid system which integrates Remote Sensing (RS) data and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) information, has been developed for land use survey in Hiroshima city. The system consists of three interrelated subsystems, i.e., a personal computer, a minicomputer and an engineering workstation: The system can handle an image data base consisting of satellite digital images such as Landsat TM and Spot HRV data, a line map data base consisting of topography and land use zoning, and an updating land use information data base consisting of raster and vector data such as remote sensing data and digital mapping data. This paper describes the implementation of the integration of multiple sensors/multi-temporal remote sensing images with digital mapping data. The application of the system to a land use survey is discussed with respect to a method of extracting land use information based on remote sensing and geographical information systems.
