Abstract Calculations of the average impulse response filter relating the AL index to the rectified solar wind electric field show that the response of the magnetosphere to pulses of southward IMF is bimodal. The average filter, however, is a poor predictor of the activity. We extend these investigations using two delta functions of arbitrary amplitude at arbitrary delay to model the bimodal response, and low pass filtering to include inductive effects. Intervals of isolated moderate magnetic activity are selected and are represented by the optimal model parameters. The prediction efficiencies average 79%. Optimal time delays and scale factors are highly variable and no factors were found which control this variation. The high prediction efficiencies seem to support the idea that the westward electrojet is driven by the solar wind.
