Abstract New kinds o f planes and expanding airport facilities: these solutions have been suggested for the problem o f airport congestion. But if only a technical view is taken of the problem, some unnecessary investments are going to be made. The economic aspect must be considered-the possibility of finding a set o f prices for space at the airports and on aircraft that will cause both kinds of space to be used more efficiently. Airports are not congested all of the time, and airliners sometimes fly with unused capacity. In an economic view, the problem is how to use the present capital more extensively by reducing demands at peak times and increasing them at others. This article proposes that a set o f prices be determined by competitive bidding.
