Abstract The structure and dynamics of the polar cap ionosphere are related to conditions in interplanetary space. This relationship is observed statistically between representative ionospheric and interplanetary parameters. In addition, certain ionospheric patterns may be characterized reliably by interplanetary conditions. The relationships demonstrated in this paper strongly suggest that archival canters for polar ionospheric data should also have available data that describe the conditions of interplanetary space.
