Abstract The unsteady thermocapillary flow with deformable free surface in a two-dimensional, rectangular thin liquid bridge is investigated theoretically. The temperature is fixed at one end and sinusoidally varied at the other end. Three important and interesting features of the unsteady thermocapillary flow are explored: (1) there exist time lags of the velocity distribution and the free surface deformation with respect to the surface temperature variation; (2) there also exists a time lag between the forward (in the direction of the thermocapillary driving force) and return (opposite to the forward flow) flows due to the free surface deformation; and (3) resonance of the free surface oscillations for the specific flow configuration considered herein exists at frequencies near the natural ones with a small modification due to the viscous flow motion.
