AbstractMaking use of meteorological balloon and M-100 rocket data at Trivandrum (8.5°N, 77°E) for a period of about 19 years (1971–1990) cycle-to-cycle evolution of zonal wind QBO is studied. It is observed that the height of occurrence of the maximum easterly/westerly wind varies systematically from one cycle to the next. The successive QBO maxima (easterly or westerly) occur progressively at higher heights and after reaching a particular height, the next maximum (easterly or westerly) occurs at a lower height. Thereafter, the height of occurrence of the successive maximum again increases.
