Abstract Aircraft manufacturers are about to boost, by record proportions, the cargo-carrying capacity of the air freight industry. Will this aggravate the industry's marketing problems? Success in broadening the air freight market apparently will depend on the carrier's ability to convince shippers that low-cost transportation is not always best. A broader view of physical distribution than that provided by the usual system of differential distribution costs is needed. Three kinds of management issues dominate determination of the efficiency of a company's distribution system: the two physical distribution issues themselves (location of plants and warehouses, selection of transport modes), and customer-related issues. Profitability represents the appropriate payoff criteria.
