AbstractSpace station will be a very large and complex structure in low earth orbit requiring many space shuttle flights to assemble it over a period of several years. The initial assembly and subsequent servicing of the space station and its associated platforms and visiting spacecraft over its planned thirty-year life will require new techniques and tools to be developed. Canada and the USA are cooperating in providing the necessary facilities for these tasks.The paper describes the assembly, maintenance and servicing tasks on and about space station and the facilities to be developed by each country to undertake these tasks. It addresses the role of automation and robotics in reducing the extra-vehicular activity required of the crew, in minimizing the disturbances to the environment of space station and in enhancing ‘user friendliness’. It also addresses the ground and transportation operations support infrastructure required for these tasks.
