Abstract Various geophysical methods have been employed to infer the geological structure beneath the central Indian Plateau. In the present paper, combined interpretations of surface geophysical and MAGSAT data have been made which confirm the presence of a 1500 km long ridge at a depth of 40 km trending NW-SE beneath the central Indian Plateau. The magnetization-setting map for the whole Indian continent has been prepared from the MAGSAT data. This map shows a prominent linear “high” with NW-SE strike direction over central India. The “high” anomaly observed by MAGSAT and “low” resistivity anomaly observed by magnetotelluric and magnetometer array studies are attributed to the presence of huge metamorphosed shales in the lower crust/upper mantle beneath the central region.
