AbstractNOAA/AVHRR Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI) scatterograms between two crop growth stage for 1986–1987 rabi season over Ludhiana district witnessing 94.9% of sown area under wheat were studied. Dispersions of RVI were less than that of NDVI for all crop growth stages except the stages witnessing no significant change in greenness where the magnitudes of dispersion were similar for RVI as well as NDVI. Scatterograms between dates witnessing high vegetative growth had bowl shapes while vertical cut off was witnessed for moderate rate wider variability (larger standard deviation) vegetative growth. Decrease in vegetative growth as well as in standard deviation resulted in horizontal cut-off. Typical cut off was observed in RVI scatterograms (not observed in NDVI) between mid of Milking-Dough and mid of Maturity-Harvesting stage.
