Abstract The AVHRR images are used for monitoring in real time whole areas of the Polish river catchments in five channels, visible and infrared. The spatial and temporal aspects of AVHRR remote sensing form a new approach to operational hydrology. The paper describes the informatic system RIVERSAT for determination of surface temperature of the Polish river catchments. Based on the LST, the soil moisture was determined. The results of AVHRR measurements vs direct land measurements are presented.
