Abstract Total electron content (TEC) data collected at ten stations in the northern hemisphere during 1981 (solar maximum) and 1985 (solar minimum) are ananlysed to study the effects of solar and magnetic activity on the latitudinal variations of nightime enhancements in TEC. The latitudinal variations of the enhancement characteristics in winter exhibit distinct minima at around 25° latitude under all conditions of solar and magnetic activity. Further minima are observed at around 45° latitude during solar maximum and at around 60° during solar minimum. These further minima move equatorwards with increasing magnetic activity during solar minimum, there is little movement during solar maximum. The observed latitudinal variations are discussed in the light of the potential source mechanisms.
