Abstract A method to calculate the daily sum of the regional evapotranspiration was investigated under Hungarian weather conditions. Two parameters, the vegetation index and the surface temperature, derived from the NOAA AVHRR images have been mainly used to characterize the regional distribution of the surface state. The ET is proportional to the difference between surface temperature and air temperature measured at 2 m height. A simple statistical method was used to calculate daily evapotranspiration (ETd) values during the vegetation period. Surface temperature and NDVI values were generated on clear days of various seasons. ETd's derived from NOAA AVHRR images and using maximum air temperature data were compared with NDVI.
