Abstract The well-known lack of existence of enough integrals to provide a closed form solution to the restricted three-body problem makes approaching it with numerical methods customary. However, useful perturbation solutions to this problem can be found in particular regions of phase space. A brief review of three different cases of interest in astrodynamics illustrates the possibilities offered by the perturbation approach in mission planning of space orbits.
Highlights A closed form solution to the restricted three-body problem does not exist. Perturbation solutions to the R3BP apply in particular regions of phase space. We show the utility of the perturbation approach in mission planning of space orbits. Three different cases of interest in astrodynamics are briefly reviewed.
