AbstractThe investigation of the radiation balance is very important in the climatology. The variations of the radiation balance of the surface are suitable indicators of possible climatic changes. Radiation balance of the satellite data gives new opportunity for mapping the surface radiation balance. Our purpose was to develop a simple method to estimate the surface radiation balance using METEOSAT digital image data and a radiative transfer model. The cloud characteristics are determined from satellite images, the other input parameters of the model calculations are taken from radiosonde observations. The radiation maps are much more detailed than the maps prepared from surface observations.
