Abstract The establishment of a governance architecture for an African space programme is a decision-making process with numerous steps and choices to be made. An adverse decision made in the early stages of the process could constrain choices to be made later, which could limit potential opportunities, resulting in far-reaching impacts on the mandate of the organisation. Hence, a sound governance architecture for an African space programme could best be served by a theoretical framework and informed choices thereto that gives credence to the chosen organisational architecture. It is also important to take into account the perceptions and preferences of experts, primarily at national, regional and continental levels, who are best placed to inform the success of the African space programme. With this in mind, this study uses a survey questionnaire instrument to investigate the perceptions and preferences of African experts on key elements of a governance framework for an African space programme and further analyse these responses against a theoretical framework. Emanating from this exercise is a suite of recommendations and a proposed governance model for an African space programme, which could input into the formalisation process for the governance framework.
