AbstractIt is in the extreme ultraviolet band (1200 Å − 1 keV) that the energy emitted by quasars and AGNs is most intense. No direct information however is yet available in this range. What constraints on the EUV continuum flux are set by the observations of the continuum in the optical, UV and X-ray ranges, and by the observations of optical/UV emission line intensity ratios? What constraints are set by plausible models of the UV/X spectrum? What are the signatures of an accretion disk in this range? We examine these questions and conclude that direct observations of the flux variations and the spectral shape of the EUV continuum are essential to make progress in this field.
