Abstract We present a theory of umbral oscillations based on Alfvèn waves, which extends earlier proposals (Uchida & Sakurai 1975), and is compatible with current models based on slow (Leibacher et al. 1982. Gurman & Leibacher 1984, Zugzda et al. 1984, 1987) and fast (Scheuer & Thomas 1981. Thomas et al. 1982, Thomas 1984). The present theory explains the same observations as earlier theories, e.g. the periods of umbral oscillations, as well as unexplained observations, e.g. the variability of periods, and makes predictions eventually ammenable to observation, e.g. the amplitudes of the modes. The theory also yields data on the solar convection zone, e.g. the depth of anchoring of magnetic field lines, and leads to results applicable to stars other than the sun, e.g. a law of intensity of radiation of MHD waves.
