Abstract The paper discusses the role of economics in decisions which affect aircraft noise, for example decisions on airport development or on land uses around airports. Methods of measuring the effects of aircraft noise and of costing them are analysed. Major policy options and economic analysis of them are discussed. Finally, suggestions for further research and improved policies are made.
