AbstractSlowdown in the world economy, world crises and innovative communication technology threaten the airline industry. Based on Norwegian data on air travel and videoconferencing this article analyzes the structure and motivation of business travel into the future. Main conclusions are that business air travel is maturing, substitution rates to other modes or video conferencing are low, there is an increasing awareness of costs but a rather low sensitivity to crises such as the Gulf war and September 11. Further, segment information is found useful when assessing the future of business travel or air travel in general.
