Abstract Using the NSSDC Composite omnitape data, the long-term dynamics of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field parameters is studied. An attempt is made to broaden our understanding of the long-term peculiarities hidden by pronounced short-term fluctuations. The degree of variability during the solar cycle is reported. Some quantitative characteristics are identified. The features revealed are discussed and compared with results obtained by other investigators.
