Abstract Incoherent scatter radar is a powerful tool for studies of D- and E-region stratifications. In the E-region the most prominent stratification is the midlatitude type of sporadic E. It has been studied by the Arecibo radar and the EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter Radar) facility, which are able to perform high range resolution measurements. In this paper we first discuss basic observations of sporadic E, i.e. measurements of electron density, metal ion contents and ion velocity within the layer and in its surroundings. Then we present observations of formation, motion, horizontal structure and destruction of layers. The D-region observations are based on measurements made by using the EISCAT facility. Very clear stratifications of the D-layer have not been observed so far, probably because the total amount of available data is still small. However, a few summertime observations of stratifications from the mesopause region exist.
