AbstractPresently, silvicultural operations in Japan are limited because of problems associated with the lack of technically sound and economically efficient equipment and systems for use under the adverse working conditions encountered in Japan. Some characteristics that contribute to the adverse working conditions are steep slopes, fragile soils and rugged terrain. The Japanese Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute has been studying to develop an articulated tracked vehicle (all-terrain vehicle) for use under those adverse conditions. This paper describes the design, unique features and operational characteristics of the articulated tracked vehicle and presents preliminary results from the field test of the vehicle to examine the effect of the active pitch control for traveling on steep slopes.
