Abstract The scope of hydromagnetic diagnosis using ULF-waves includes monitoring of the parameters of the solar wind and of the dynamics of the boundaries of the main structural elements of the magnetosphere, revealing a variety of types of instabilities giving birth to different wave regimes and tracing large and small scale processes in the distant and other parts of the magnetosphere. The main topics of this paper are: monitoring parameters of the solar wind, diagnosis of the structure and dynamics of the polar cusp, wave regimes connected with eigenoscillations of the magnetosphere and their use for diagnosis, utilization of ULF-waves as an indirect indicator of processes in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere. It is stressed, that, in order to improve the quality and the reliability of the results of hydromagnetic diagnosis it is necessary first to recognize the “signature” of different pulsations, specifically those in the same or adjacent frequency bands, (which have, however, different sources) and only then proceed with their analysis.
