Abstract The use of fluctuation analyses of the extragalactic X-ray Background to determine source counts down to very faint levels is reivewed. It is shown that the instrumentation being developed for ASTRO D (expected to be launched in 1993) will be able to resolve a high percentage of the background (via analysis of fluctuations) and that its spectral coverage will also give an answer to the mismatch of source counts in different energy bands. Estimates of the required exposure times are given.
