AbstractThe elaboration, then the use of a digital program simulating the unsteady behaviour of a liquid propellant rocket engine require the preliminary knowledge of the droplet size and velocity distributions relatively to space and time, in the region where the drops are created. But the whole set of the injection and atomization processes is too complex for a theoretical approach. Therefore, a purely empirical and global method has been chosen that requires a complete test program (without burning) if a given injector type (here, an impinging-jet type) must be characterized as a function of all the design and working parameters. The success of the anticipated test program rests upon a reasonable confidence in the optical size-measurement technics, which have been till now scarcely used in the rocket engine field. Complemental means, based on the measurement of the light scattered by illuminated drops, have been selected and must be both validated and calibrated by considering the high concentrations and the rather great diameters of concern. The kind of approach is more relative to the characterization of the steady-state problem; however, the unsteady aspect is not ignored by taking into account, after the steady-state equations are linearized, the physical time lags and the modulation due to the break-up of the originating jets.
