Abstract The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) collaborated with several universities on a superpressure balloon flight program for studies of the Electrodynamics of the Middle Atmosphere (EMA). Measurements were made at 26 km for periods ranging from 15 to 60 days. All flights took place in the southern hemisphere. This paper discusses the unique features of the EMA vehicle as a platform for long-duration measurements at stratospheric altitudes. These include solar power supplies and batteries in space, temperature control of the gondola utilizing a heat pipe, magnetometers, a CMOS data control system, data transmission to the ARGOS data collection system and a balloon launching technique.
