Highlights Having no alternative for the daily use of a car can be seen as the ‘hard core’ of car dependency. In almost all areas in the Netherlands daily amenities are within walking and cycling distance. In urban and suburban Netherlands 60–80% of commuters have jobs within e-bicycle distance. In these areas spatial conditions could allow a doubling of the share of the (e)-bicycle in commuting.
