Abstract A number of experiments in the field of gravitation and relativity have been proposed that require highly stable frequency standards to be operated in space for extended periods. Clocks for such applications must have high frequency stability, small size and weight, low power comsumption, and high reliability. We discuss the characteristics of atomic clocks that are currently available for use in space and that may be available over roughly the next decade.
