Abstract Over the five last years, the number of scientific teams involved in the microgravity programmes supported by the French space agency CNES has been multiplied by more than two. That is largely due to a “seed money” policy whose objective is to support a ground based research programme dealing with the “microgravity relevance” of the scientific topics under consideration. A recent seminar of prospective attended by a large number of French scientists, among whom many were not familiar with the subject, has indicated what were for the French scientific community the most promising themes to study in the coming years and the most suitable tools of investigation. Beside the more familiar topics in the field of condensed matter physics, new topics have emerged in the field of fundamental physics. A general recommandation is the development of in-situ experimental diagnostics. The need for more frequent and easy to implement flight opportunities, especially using recoverable satellites, has been pointed out. A review of the on-going and future projects is also presented.
