Abstract To reduce the noise nuisance of aircraft, consideration is sometimes given to shielding the engines from the ground by means of the aircraft wings and tailplane. Methods of calculating the shielding effect are reviewed. Allowance for refraction by the flowfield on the basis of ray theory is also discussed, as is the special problem of the wing trailing edge where noise may be generated by interaction both with acoustic sources and with jet flow.
