Abstract Analysis of the lunar tide in the geomagnetic D element at selected stations reveals several anomalous features. A seasonal phase anomaly is confirmed. Large changes in amplitude from year to year are found and a large amplitude in the African region is a consistent feature. It appears that these effects mirror changes in the lunar upper atmosphere tide itself rather than ionospheric influences.
