AbstractIn the last decade, campus planners in the US have been struggling to provide access and mobility without destroying campus qualities as distinct communities. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on how college campuses have encouraged a modal shift from cars to other modes, and in particular to bicycling and walking. I report the results of a survey of eight pre-selected bicycle and pedestrian friendly campuses. My argument is that due to their pro-active educational milieu, college campuses are privileged places to communicate sustainability and to help reshape society's transportation patterns.
