Abstract Current practices in urban transportation planning tend to neglect the automobile passenger. This study shows that a large number of urban trips are made as an automobile passenger and that the general characteristics of these passengers are similar to transit passengers rather than automobile drivers. The significance of these findings are discussed in terms of modelling the use of various urban travel modes.
