AbstractThis paper examines the extent to which fugitive road dust particulate emissions in Kanpur, India are a significant source of air pollution. Field sampling of road dust at four locations on one of the main roads of the city, laboratory analysis and computational exercises were undertaken to assess road dust emission. It is found that fugitive road dust emissions accounts for 20–35% of vehicle tailpipe emissions. The location with large number of heavy-duty diesel vehicles passing has the greatest dust emissions; in the range 441–732kgd−1km−1. Fugitive road dust emissions are highest in the winter.
