AbstractA 25-year record of ozonesonde profiles from fourteen stations has been examined for the occurrence of thin layers of enhanced and depleted ozone. The layers, or laminae, occur primarily in spring in both hemispheres from polar to middle latitudes, with a maximum rate of occurrence at around 14km in altitude. Significant year to year variations are apparent at all latitudes. The average vertical extent of the laminae and the increase (or decrease) in ozone partial pressure inside them differ with latitude, altitude and season, appearing sharpest and deepest around 14km during spring.
