Abstract Most local injury control programs address injury problems identified by national data, which do not always identify specific local injury problems. Injury problems and trends vary greatly between communities; therefore, specific information is needed to characterize community problems and to target injury control measures. Local injury surveillance data are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of various state and local injury control measures. This report discusses the rationale and attributes of surveillance systems for injuries, evaluates existing sources for injury surveillance data, describes several injury surveillance systems, and suggests alternative data sources and models for state- or community-based injury surveillance systems.
