Abstract A new approach in the boundary layer description of the magnetopause is proposed. The magnetopause is considered as a mixing region of two streams of plasma with different parameters. The assumption is made that wave-particle interactions cause the plasma to be resistive. Thus only the magnetic viscosity is supposed to be essential. Other dissipation effects are neglected. The plasma and magnetic field conditions at the outer boundary of the layer can be obtained from the solution of the nondissipative problem for the magnetosheath. The magnetic field is assumed to be known at the inner boundary. No further conditions are needed in our formulation of the problem. The variation of the flow parameters and the magnetic field can be obtained numerically.
