AbstractThe Shuttle Columbia tragedy has prompted the USA to raise fundamental questions about its civil space program. Interest in returning people to the Moon is being given renewed consideration. China has sent a citizen into and back from Earth orbit and expects to extend its human presence to the Moon's surface. India plans to land robots there. It is therefore important to see that the original, 1969 human lunar landing area, the ‘Tranquility Base’, with its contents, now becomes a UN World Heritage Site, to be protected for all, for all time. The USA should request the UN to consider doing this.
