Abstract The conventional air temperatures based Growing Degree Days (GDD) is an agrometeorological crop growth monitoring parameter. Using 1987–1988 data sets, the temporal profiles of NDVI/RVI (natural integration of non-linear crop agrometeorological growth processes) and GDD were regressed for two districts which had 91.63 to 93.91% of agricultural area under wheat. The maximum and mean air temperature based GDD were related with NDVI/RVI over the entire wheat growth cycle at 99% and 90–99% significance level, respectively. The minimum air temperature GDD, relevant only till milking stage, also had 95–99% significance level relationship with NDVI/RVI temporal profiles till milking stage. Regression upto late flowering stage gave better correlations for maximum/minimum/mean temperature GDD and NDVI/RVI. For regression over the entire crop growth cycle the NDVI was better correlated with GDD than RVI.
