AbstractThe theory of concentration and potential variations at interfaces is applied to the membrane-solution interface to calculate density variations. The theory is modified to take care of the finite ion volumes in electrolytes. Our model is a phospholipid membrane with a surface charge density of −4.82410−6(As/cm2) in contact with solutions of KCl, NaCl, CaCl2, and mixtures. Maximal density variations of about 410−2(g/cm3) were found in surface layers between the membrane and the solutions. The extension of the layers is in the range of 1 to 6 nm.
