Abstract Stratospheric water vapor has been measured by a Lyman alpha fluorescence technique on board long duration balloon during a ten days flight. The results demonstrate that such a long period is needed for a complete outgasing of the instrument. Data recorded during the last day of flight at 40°S South of Australia in August 1985 provides an upper limit of water vapor mixing ratio at 20 km of 4 ± 1 ppmV.
