AbstractFrequencies of perceived conflicts between airplanes moving along two intersecting air routes have been examined by several researchers. Throughout these studies, however, conflicts as perceived by ground air traffic controllers were considered without respect to duration. Durations of perceived air conflicts vary widely and depend on the problem's parameters as well as on the relative positions of the aircraft at the moment they enter each other's domain. The present paper considers a more refined question, namely, the frequency of the perceived air conflicts with prescribed duration. It is a direct extension of previous work. The paper also suggests further research problems in this area and possible ways to attack them.
