Abstract The paper discusses the problems arising when establishing average electron density profiles in the valley height range. Validity of the set of formulas established in the past is critically discussed. It is shown that variations of the ionospheric EF valley profile are preceding in time to similar local geomagnetic variations when the solar activity effects are removed using 27-day running mean values at sunrise during solar minimum. Routine data obtained at 6 ionospheric stations over many years are used to establish statistics of occasions when electron density profiles could not be computed due to missing or aberrant data. Different criteria of ionosphere disturbances are applied at different latitudes. Synthesis of missing data in monthly tables of ionospheric characteristics is considered as a way to complete the data base for modeling purposes.
