Abstract The properties of the X-ray emission from normal stars, i.e., single stars located on the main-sequence or giant branch, are reviewed. Theoretical attempts to explain the observed X-ray emission both from early as well as late type stars are presented and, in particular, coronal length scale determination from spatially unresolved data is discussed and applied to the Sun as a star.
