AbstractFollowing the success of ERS-1 and the endorsement of the Agency's Earth observation programme by the European Ministers at their meeting in Munich, Germany in November 1991, the Agency is now moving ahead with the implementation of an ambitious programme for Earth observation. In addition to extending the Meteosat programme it is planned to fly a series of polar missions starting with ERS-2 in 1994, the successor to ERS-1. Later polar missions will be extended to carry instruments intended to increase the amount of data available to address many of the topics of fundamental importance to mankind including climate, the environment, the use of the Earth's resources and operational meteorology. Also a solid earth mission to be carried out jointly with NASA is planned to measure the Earth's gravity and magnetic fields. These various programmes will be outlined together with links partners in Europe and internationally will be highlighted.
