Abstract In high-energy solar flares, defined as flares that emit an observable gamma-ray spectrum, there can be three subsequent phases of particle acceleration. Primary acceleration of electrons to ∼ 10 MeV occurs within less than 0.1 s. It is suggested that this happens in many explosive coalescences between the many fluxthreads in the flare area. One or two seconds later ions are accelerated to ∼ 100 MeV in an expanding shock-wave dominated electric field system; this is the second phase . A few minutes later ions can be further accelerated (to ∼ GeV energies) in a field line system opening to space. This is the third phase .
